Our designs are made-to-order and have an underlying modularity that allows for creative flexibility and a straightforward installation. As both the designer and the manufacturer, Submaterial can easily customize our products, changing color or scale to suit the intended environment. From its start in 2006 in the rain-drenched Pacific Northwest to our current sun-soaked New Mexico studio, Submaterial has always focused on natural and sustainable materials such as wool felt, cork, wood, and leather. These materials are fashioned by hand into beautifully surfaced wallcoverings, panels, screens, and more by our skilled fabricators using environmentally conscious and lean manufacturing processes. We create beautiful and responsibly produced designs for human spaces while supporting the humans who make them.

Meso Wall Panel

Highly geometric, the Meso panel features a built-up surface of concentric squares in vegetable-tanned cowhide. Cut and assembled by hand, each richly detailed panel celebrates the precise handwork which has become a Submaterial signature. Hang as a single showpiece or curate salon-style with other artworks.

Century Screen

Modern, yet nostalgic. Solid, yet see-through. The new Century Screen elevates any space. Fabricated in walnut or white oak veneer laminated with natural cork and hung in tiles of variable length, the elements of the Century screen are positionable; one can twist and turn the tiles to create the transparency level of their choice. The engaging dimensional surface catches the sunlight and produces dramatic shadows.

Wander Mirrors

The perfect marriage of form and function, our Wander Mirror collection has simple, clean lines and a modern feel. The ribbed effect of the wool felt strips turned on edge creates a deep texture that frames the contours of the mirror glass inserts. Each Wander mirror invites you to picture yourself surrounded by its stylish geometry. The Wander Mirrors are produced in various shapes and sizes to enhance any space, from traditional circles, squares, and rectangles to lively pill or hexagon-shaped mirrors.

Aerial Wall Panel

Inspired by urban and agricultural landforms as seen from the air, the Aerial wall panel softens harsh acoustics with its dimensional surface of wool felt and natural cork. Aerial can be composed using a single color to emphasize its deep texture, or you may select from more than 90 available options to create a striking custom colorway.

Construct | Finite Wall Hanging

Constructs are about connections. Modular pattern elements are fashioned individually and then connected creating a detailed and dimensional whole. Fabricated in soft, tactile materials such as leather and Ultrasuede, the wall hanging almost begs to be touched. The Construct Finite pattern calls to mind the curved graphic lines of mid-century architectural tilework. The subtle volume creates a delightful play of light and shadow.
